Dear Church Members, Brothers and Sisters in Christ and Friends,
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
We would like to draw your attention to our plan to extend our existing Church building to provide for a new Sanctuary, 3 new Classrooms and a Multi-Purpose Room. We hope you could spend a few minutes to read this newsletter to better understand our plan and to support us.
Our existing Church building was constructed back in 1969 thanks to the faith, vision and donations from the earlier Church members and friends, many of whom are still with us today. Back then, they had the faith and vision to build a larger than required Church building which, in retrospect, has indeed enriched and changed our lives in many ways. To say that our Church building is merely a place to worship God and to teach and cultivate the morals and values of Christianity would be an understatement. To many of us, the Church has also become a home away from home. A place where we could hide when in sadness and a place where we had spent much of our teen years growing up together with fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Remember the table-tennis, badminton, volleyball and football games that we had had together in the Church compound or the group study at the Church library or the old parsonage building? Unlike most churches in bigger towns or cities, we could actually spend a lot of our active time and literally grow up in a small town church such as Trinity Methodist Church. We believe that our Church will always have a special place in your heart to constantly remind you of your love for Christ and His love for you and that what you have achieved today could, to a certain extent, be attributed to the existence of the Church in Pekan Gurney and, in particular, the seeds of faith sowed by the earlier Church members and friends.
Encouraged and spurred by the act of love and faith shown by the earlier Church members and friends, we see a need to extend the Church building to better cater for our existing needs as well as to provide/build for the future generations.
In fact, with a seating capacity of 270 persons, the existing Sanctuary is unable to accommodate the congregation during festive thanksgiving service or other special service or celebrations. The attendance for our 2008 CNY Thanksgiving Service was 856, 2008 Christmas Celebration was 411 and 2008 Easter Celebration was 314. The average attendance for the weekly Sunday Service last year was 224.
In addition, our Kindergarten classrooms and facilities have also deteriorated due to wear and tear.
If you have not already known, back in 1988 we had planned to build a multi-purpose hall and an education centre cum parsonage (hereinafter referred to as the Original Building Project) but the plan had to be put on hold because we were required to apply to the relevant authority to change the condition of use in our Church’s 2 title grants from agriculture to religion building before we can carry out the Original Building Project.
We are pleased to inform you that the relevant authority had in February 2008 finally approved our application and agreed to issue a new title grant to us with the condition of use changed to religion building¡. Hallelujah, Praise the Lord!
Realising that there is a more pressing need to build a new Sanctuary (rather than a big multi-purpose hall) and new Classrooms due to the earlier stated reasons, the LCEC had unanimously decided to amend the Original Building Project by replacing it with a new building project under which we plan to build the following:-
1) a 1 ½ storey Sanctuary which will include a Creche Room and a Meeting Room. The ground floor of the Sanctuary (including the Creche Room and the Meeting Room) has a seating capacity of approximately 600 and the theatre-styled Gallery at the first floor has a seating capacity of approximately 200;
2) three standard Classrooms measuring 30 feet by 20 feet;
3) one Multi-Purpose Room measuring 60 feet by 20 feet (with a collapsible wall at the center to convert the Multi-Purpose Room into 2 standard Classrooms, if needed); and
4) a kitchen
(hereinafter collectively referred to as the New Building Project).
We enclose herewith a copy of the Layout Plan and Artist’s impression of the New Building Project for your reference.
As for the existing Sanctuary, upon the completion of the New Building Project we will use the existing Sanctuary as a sub-hall for Sunday School and youth worship and activities.
The construction costs for the New Building Project including the costs of fixtures and fitting works is estimated at RM2 million.
You may perhaps question the need and/or timing for such an expensive building project, especially during this gloomy economic climate. We too had asked ourselves the same question on many occasions but on each occasion we are convinced even more that this is the ¡°ripe¡± time to carry out the New Building Project due to the following reasons:-
i) whilst the downturn in economy is bound to adversely affect our financial means and will force many of us to review our priorities, we also believe that this is a good time for us to turn our eyes to God. Instead of over focusing on our earthly needs, why not we focus on our personal relationship with God and participate in the works of His kingdom. After all, Jesus had assured us in Matthew 6:33, “ But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you.”;
ii) the downturn in economy has started to lower down the costs of building materials which in turn will result in more savings for our Church in terms of construction costs; and
iii) we should capitalize on the present State Government’s more liberal and friendly policies and stand on matters pertaining to religion as evidenced by their willingness to reduce the premium for the new title grant from RM37,746.00 to RM1,000.00, which we had paid in November 2008.
For your information, we had begun collecting offerings/donations for the Building Project (hereinafter referred to as the Building Fund) back in 1988 and as at 31st December 2008 the Building Fund stands at approximately RM540,000.00. In addition, thanks to God’s provision and blessing, our Church has throughout the years managed to accumulate approximately RM500,000.00 in savings which our Church is prepared to utilise to finance the New Building Project.
Taking into account the Building Fund already collected and our Church’s accumulated savings, we are actually short of RM1 million as far as the construction costs is concerned. It is, however, our target and hope to raise an additional sum of more than RM1 million for the New Building Project so that we can still have some reserve for the Church.
Therefore, we hereby invite and urge you to participate in this New Building Project. Do pray earnestly and offer/donate generously to make this New Building Project a success to glorify God and to benefit and enrich the lives of others.
You may make your offering/donation to the Building Fund in one single payment or multiple or instalment payments. You may make your offering/donation by any of the following mode of payments:-
- via cash payment (Note: Please do not send your cash payment by post)
- via cheque or bank draft made payable to Trinity Methodist Church Building Fund
- via direct bank in or fund transfer to our savings account in AmBank under the name of Trinity Methodist Church Building Fund and under account number 184-001-008503-0.
We encourage you to make a donation pledge indicating the total amount and the payment timing of your offering/donation to enable us to ascertain in advance the amount of funds that we could raise so that we could plan further fund raising activities and time the progress of the construction works more efficiently. We also enclose herewith a copy of the Donation Pledge Form for your further action. Even if you do not wish to make any donation or donation pledge, we hope you could still fill-up your personal particulars including your correspondence address and contact number to enable us to keep in touch with you and keep you updated of the latest progress in the New Building Project and our Church’s other activities.
We hope to commence construction works for the New Building Project this year and to complete the same by end of 2010. Please keep this matter in your prayer.
To show our gratitude to those who had donated generously to the Building Fund and in remembrance of their offerings/donations, we have decided to do the following:-
- to inscribe the name of the donors (or their nominees) who had donated RM60,000.00 or more on a stoneplate to be placed on a wall near the pulpit area of the new Sanctuar
- to inscribe the name of the donors (or their nominees) who had donated RM40,000.00 and above (but below RM60,000.00) on a stoneplate to be placed on a wall near the entrance to the Gallery at the first floor of the new Sanctuary;
- to inscribe the name of the donors (or their nominees) who had donated RM30,000.00 or more (but below RM40,000.00) on a stoneplate to be placed on a wall near the entrance to either the Creche Room or the Meeting Room at the ground floor of the new Sanctuary;
- to inscribe the name of the donors (or their nominees) who had donated RM20,000.00 or more (but below RM30,000.00) on a stoneplate to be placed on a wall near the entrance to the Multi-Purpose Room;
- to inscribe the name of the donors (or their nominees) who had donated RM10,000.00 or more (but below RM20,000.00) on a stoneplate to be placed on a wall near the entrance to either one of the 3 standard Classrooms;
- to inscribe the name of all donors (regardless of the amount of money donated) on a copper plate to be affixed at a place to be decided later on and
- to publish the name of all donors (regardless of the amount of money donated) in a magazine or bulletin specially dedicated to the New Building Project.
There were already some Church Members and friends who had made donations to the Building Fund in memory of their loved ones who had passed away.
On the other hand, we will also respect the decision of donors who wish to remain anonymous.
Lastly, we have decided to dedicate this year’s CNY Thanksgiving Offering to the Building Fund. We hope to raise at least RM1 million from the CNY Thanksgiving Offering and the donation pledges during this CNY. It may seem like a tall order but we believe God’s children, including me and you, will rise to the challenge. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will work within us and inspire us to participate in this New Building Project.
Let us all store up for ourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal (Matthew 6:20). Remember the event recorded in John 6:1-13 where Jesus fed 5,000 people using 5 small barley loaves and 2 small fish given by a boy? Did that boy go hungry that day after he had given up his food? NO! They all had enough to eat that day and the disciples had even gathered 12 baskets of left over barley loaves and fish. Yes, the little boy had chosen to share his food and Jesus had used that boy’s generosity to bless others and Jesus had also ensured that the boy had more than enough to eat. Likewise, God will use your generosity to bless others and you can trust Him to still take care of your daily needs.
May the Lord bless you and your family.
Yours faithfully,
Ling Chee Wei, on behalf of the Building Committee,
